Choosing the Right MBA

Rankings are messy, but you can’t ignore them entirely. Decide what you actually want (MBB? Tech? Entrepreneurship?) before obsessing over the M7.

• For MBB, IB, PE: absolutely.
• For tech, corporate leadership, startups, ROI plays: fit + cost may matter more than brand.

• Top 10 → elite access.
• Top 20 → elite access with more hustle.
• Top 50 → strong regional plays; elite finance/PE less likely.

M7 = Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Booth, Kellogg, Columbia, MIT Sloan.

Would you take $200K debt for an M7 or full ride top-20? Be honest about whether brand truly changes your outcome.

• National: HBS, Booth, Wharton, Kellogg, Sloan, Duke, Ross, Darden.
• Regional powerhouses: SMU (Dallas), Rice (Houston energy), Foster (Seattle tech), Kelley & Mendoza (Midwest), Georgetown (DC federal consulting).

If you know where you want to live, regional might be perfect.

• Public schools = 100% covered in-state tuition (Ross, Darden, UNC, McCombs).
• Private schools capped at ~$23.7K unless Yellow Ribbon fills the gap (most elite privates do).

• Kellogg → marketing/brand
• Darden → consulting
• CMU Tepper & Stanford → product/tech
• Yale SOM & Haas → ESG/public sector

Pick the school that dominates your target industry.

Ask vets and current students:

• “Would you choose this program again?”
• “How good is the career center really?”
• “Is the GI Bill fully covered?”
• “How supportive is the community for families?”

Stick to: Poets & Quants, US News, Businessweek, Financial Times, Forbes, The Economist. Always check full-time MBA lists.
