Management Consulting

Understand the travel grind, culture, and case interview gauntlet before you recruit.

Management Consulting

Lifestyle snapshot

  • Mon: 6AM flight, client site noon, work until 8PM, team dinner.
  • Tue/Wed: Gym at 6AM, client grind, late nights.
  • Thu: Travel day (maybe), still working on decks.
  • Fri: Remote or in-office for all-hands/socials.
  • Weekends: Sometimes calm, sometimes deck triage.

Consulting is intense, but the exposure and brand can be worth it.

Social expectations

  • Dress appropriately for any setting.
  • Hold your own in convos about business/sports/culture.
  • Know food/drink etiquette; loyalty programs matter.
  • Read rooms; EQ > IQ with clients.
  • Present under pressure.
  • Be prepared to sacrifice sleep/family when projects spike.

Entry paths

PathNotes
Post-undergradAnalyst/Associate Consultant; heavy modeling and decks; 2–3 year stint
Post-MBAAssociate/Consultant; lead workstreams, manage clients & teams; 2–3 years to Engagement Manager

Veterans can target either based on degree/experience.

Recruiting OS

  • Join the school consulting club and follow its 30/60/90 plan.
  • Stack 20–30 coffee chats with alumni and firm reps.
  • Case 5–7 times/week and track feedback.
  • Treat behaviorals as seriously as cases.
  • Target firms in waves (boutiques → Big 4 → MBB/Accenture) to sharpen reps.

Case prep essentials

  • Guides: Kellogg, Fuqua, Darden, Victor Cheng.
  • Drill mental math daily.
  • Synthesis matters—consultants live/die on “So what?”
  • Debrief each case; fix one thing at a time.
  • Use Sitreps cohorts for accountability and feedback.

Behavioral playbook

  • Leadership under pressure
  • Conflict resolution
  • Driving change without authority
  • Handling setbacks
  • Difficult stakeholders

Use STAR/CLEAR, record practice answers, keep to 90 seconds.

Wave strategy

WaveTargets
1Boutiques, niche firms, alumni-owned
2Big 4 (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG)
3MBB + Accenture Strategy

Early waves = reps + offers. Later waves = stretch goals.

Offer conversion

  • Send thank-you notes within 24 hours.
  • Ask for feedback if rejected.
  • Negotiate start dates, sign-ons, office preferences.
  • Compare travel appetite, staffing models, culture, mentorship.
