Networking Playbook
Move beyond awkward coffee chats—treat networking like mission planning.

Why networking matters
- Internal referrals drive shortlists.
- You learn about comp/lifestyle/culture before interviews.
- You’re doing the employee a favor (most need to source talent).
- Elite roles (consulting, IB) require it.
Informational interviews
Treat them like real interviews.
- Prep like a first-round (company news, role, industry basics).
- Ask alumni/peers for 25–30 minutes.
- Goal: learn + earn a referral.
- Always send a thank-you email afterward.
What to share
- Summarize your background, why you pursued grad school, concentrations, key interests.
- Show curiosity and enthusiasm for their path.
Questions to ask
- “What was your background before this role?”
- “How does your day actually look?”
- “What skills/traits succeed here?”
- “What’s the typical progression?”
- “If I’m interested in X long-term, what routes get there?”
- “What surprised you about the job/company?”
About the company/industry
- “How would you describe the culture?”
- “Why did you pick this firm over others?”
- “What’s happening in this industry now? Any must-read journals/podcasts?”
Do’s and don’ts
- Don’t ask for a job—ask for advice.
- Don’t make them do your homework.
- Don’t ask recruiters if they hire internationals (info is public; apply anyway).
- Do proofread every email.
- Do respect their time and follow up.
Finishing the conversation
- Ask how hiring managers might view your background.
- Request feedback on your resume if appropriate.
- Ask who else you should meet (“May I mention your name when I reach out?”).
- Send a thank-you within 24 hours.
