TermMeaningApplies to
REFRADRelease From Active DutyEnlisted & officers on active orders
UQRUnqualified ResignationActive duty officers (usually O-3+)
ADSOActive Duty Service ObligationContractual time that must be served (commissioning, grad school, flight school, etc.)

You can’t UQR/REFRAD until the ADSO is complete—unless you get a waiver.

Timeline

  • Fall MBA start (Aug/Sep) → submit separation packet 9–12 months out.
  • MBA applications: Sep–Jan.
  • REFRAD/UQR packet: Oct–Dec (prior year).
  • Target terminal leave: May–Jul to give cushion for PCS/move.

What packets need

  • DA Form 4187 (or service equivalent).
  • Statement of intent / reason for separation.
  • Acceptance letter (MBA/job) + funding plan (GI Bill, VRE, etc.).
  • Proposed timeline for terminal leave vs. class start.
  • ERB/ORB, medical/dental clearance, command endorsement.

Watch-outs

  • ADSO mis-tracked → packet denied.
  • Late paperwork → lose terminal leave or miss school start.
  • Medical readiness issues → packet kicked back.
  • Commands can slow-roll—escalate via S1/legal if needed.

Options after separation

  • Shift into IRR for flexibility.
  • Join Army Reserve/Guard to keep benefits or collect bonuses.
  • Some MBA programs support students drilling while in school.
