Benefits
Total & Permanent Disability (TPD) Discharge
Veterans rated P&T or IU can wipe federal student debt—here’s how.
What TPD discharge covers
Forgives 100% of federal Direct, FFEL, Perkins loans and TEACH Grant obligations if you’re deemed totally and permanently disabled by the VA, SSA, or a physician.
Most vets qualify via VA determination (100% P&T or Individual Unemployability). Debt is forgiven tax-free (since 2018).
How to apply
- Go to disabilitydischarge.com.
- Select “Veteran” and authorize the Department of Education to verify your status with VA.
- Submit the short form—or wait for the VA to auto-flag you.
No doctor statements needed if you already have the VA rating.
Future schooling considerations
You can still pursue an MBA or other programs using GI Bill/Yellow Ribbon. But if you want new federal loans:
- You must certify you’re no longer totally and permanently disabled.
- A physician must confirm you can engage in substantial gainful activity.
- New loans within 3 years can revoke the discharge if your disability status changes.
Should you use TPD?
- If you’re P&T/IU and have federal loan debt, it’s usually a no-brainer.
- If you don’t plan to borrow again, there’s zero downside.
- If you might need loans later, weigh the pros/cons—but remember GI Bill + Yellow Ribbon often removes the need for new debt.
