VRE vs GI Bill
How Sitreps vets decide which benefit to burn for an MBA (and when to use both).
Key differences
| Feature | GI Bill | VR&E |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | General education benefit | Employment-focused training for disabled vets |
| Eligibility | 90+ days active duty (or 30+ + Purple Heart) | ≥10% disability + employment handicap |
| Time limit | Unlimited if separated after 2013 (else 15 yrs) | Usually within 12 yrs of separation |
| Tuition | Public in-state 100% or $23.7K private (YR helps) | 100% of tuition anywhere |
| Books/tech | $1K stipend, no laptop | Fully covered + equipment |
| Housing | MHA (E-5 w/ dependents) | Subsistence allowance or MHA option |
| Benefit months | 36 total | Case-by-case; can preserve GI Bill |
When VR&E shines
- You have a qualifying VA disability rating (10%+, ideally 100% P&T/IU).
- You want to save GI Bill months for another degree or family transfer.
- You need additional support: equipment, parking, adaptive resources.
- Your MBA goal aligns with an approved employment outcome.
Sitreps members have used VR&E to pay for Wharton, Sloan, Kellogg, etc., while keeping all 36 GI Bill months untouched.
When the GI Bill is easier
- No qualifying disability rating.
- Want a straightforward process (no counselor approval).
- Attending a public university with automatic 100% coverage.
- Planning to stack with Yellow Ribbon at private schools.
GI Bill + Yellow Ribbon still covers 100% at HBS, Stanford, Booth, etc.—if you secure a slot.
Using both strategically
- Some vets use VR&E for one degree, GI Bill for another (or transfer GI Bill to family).
- Others burn the GI Bill first, then pursue VR&E later—but the VA may ask why additional training is needed.
Always coordinate with your Voc Rehab counselor before sequencing benefits.
Myths
- “VR&E is only for trade school” → False. It covers MBAs, JDs, STEM, etc., if tied to employment.
- “You can't use VR&E at top private schools” → False. Sitreps alumni have done it.
- “Once you choose one benefit you're locked in” → Not necessarily—planning upfront matters.
