Yellow Ribbon Explained
Turn a six-figure MBA (or JD, MS, etc.) into a $0 tuition bill.
What is Yellow Ribbon?
It’s a VA + school partnership that covers private-school tuition costs above the GI Bill cap ($23,671.94 for 2024–25). Schools contribute an amount, and the VA matches it dollar-for-dollar.
Result: many top MBA programs (HBS, Wharton, Booth, Sloan, Kellogg, Columbia, Stanford, etc.) end up fully covered when combined with the GI Bill.
Eligibility checklist
- You must be at the 100% Post-9/11 GI Bill tier.
- Enrolled at a VA-approved private institution that participates in Yellow Ribbon.
- Apply early if the school caps slots (some offer unlimited seats; others are first-come).
- Dependents using transferred benefits can also qualify.
Example: Wharton MBA (~$87K/yr)
| Funding Source | Amount |
|---|---|
| GI Bill | $23,671.94 |
| School Yellow Ribbon | $31,664.03 |
| VA Match | $31,664.03 |
| Total Covered | $87,000 ✅ |
Out-of-pocket tuition: $0. Books stipend ($1K/yr) + housing allowance (MHA) still apply.
Application flow
- Apply and get accepted to the program.
- Send your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to the school.
- Submit the school’s Yellow Ribbon form (or confirm auto-enrollment).
- Lock your seat quickly; some universities limit annual slots.
- The school + VA coordinate payments behind the scenes.
Pro tips
- Ask the VA certifying official exactly how funds are applied (tuition vs. fees).
- Even “unlimited” schools sometimes require the paperwork—don’t assume.
- Pair Yellow Ribbon with VR&E or GI Bill planning to avoid benefit overlap.
- Reach out to the Sitreps team (via our contact page) if you need a school-by-school breakdown.
